gov CLASSIFICATION TITLE:
Library Assistant/Riverdale PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION Performs a variety of duties relating to the overall operation of the public library.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position.
The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Implements all circulation policies and procedures; executes the overall operation of the circulation desk.
Performs circulation duties; checks books in and out; retrieves books from book drop; writes overdue letters; takes overdue fines, writes receipts, and makes bank deposits; issues library cards; requests inter-library loan services; assists in managing circulation and patron services.
Operates library facility; shelves books and audio-video; ensures shelves are in order.
Assists patrons in choosing books to read; assists patrons with research material; looks up information in electronic information resources, encyclopedias, reference books, on-line catalog; directs and assists with reference questions; maintains all patron registration files.
Helps patrons operate copier and computers.
Processes incoming and outgoing mail; checks in periodicals.
Repairs books; glues and/or tapes torn pages, replaces missing pages, re-inserts and glues loose pages, etc.
Researches and processes missing materials; contacts patrons by phone regarding missing materials on their card with fines and/or lost fees; follows up with letter if not returned; places stop on patron accounts until issues are resolved.
Processes new books; stamps logo on book; attaches spine label; checks books into system.
Enrolls patrons in special programs; registers voters.
Designs and prepares displays, bulletin boards, and posters.
Answers telephone and directs calls to various work stations.
Distributes federal and state tax forms.
Adds patron reserve book requests to computer system; notifies patrons when request arrives.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Maintains cleanliness and general order of library.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or GED supplemented by five (5) months previous experience and/or training that includes library work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability:
Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (20-40 pounds).
Sensory Requirements:
Tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, texture, and visual cues or signals.
Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, pollen, odors or noise extremes.
